It is almost impossible for me to even believe that this year will be the fifth year in a row of running Spirit Day. It’s absolutely mind blowing to even think of.
For those of you that don’t know, I started Spirit Day in 2010 following the suicides of several LGBT teens, including kids like Asher Brown and Tyler Clementi. I wanted to bring awareness about the suicides to the greater world and with your help, we did. We let the world know that homophobic/transphobic bullying was not okay - that it could end in some pretty terrible stuff. With your help, homophobic bullying became a discussion, it became something people tried harder to think about and to consider when speaking to their friends in their every day lives. I can just remember finishing high school and hardly ever hearing anyone in my grade refer to someone else as a “fag” or some lame homework assignment as “gay.” It was so incredible.
However, homophobia and transphobia still exist. People are still bullied every day and are considering suicide as a real, honest option. Please, help me remind the world that we made an pledge - we said we would stand up to bullying and we will. Wear purple with me on October 16th, 2014 and stand up to bullying.
If you’d like to go the extra mile, reblog this post, tweet your favourite celebs and join the Facebook event. I encourage you to use whatever resources are at your disposal. If you’re good at public speaking, talk to your school/workplace. If you like to make videos, make a video. If you’re good at art, draw a picture and submit it to me so I can post it. Do whatever you can to spread the word because on October 16th, we will be turning the world purple!
